Leadership Essentials for a New Day
It has almost become cliché to say that we are living in uncertain and anxiety-provoking times as the coronavirus continues to endanger the financial viability and service capacity of early childhood education programs, imperils the field’s programmatic future, and impedes the workforce’s employment prospects. Simultaneously, though, the field’s commitment to confronting the damage incurred by COVID-19 is on full display. Our loyalty to children and families clearly has not diminished. In fact, it’s time for the ECE field to use this moment to rethink our trajectory toward improved educator competence, increased consistency in quality across ECE sites, and a more equitable future for children and the ECE workforce.

Beyond Discipline to Guidance
Conventional discipline carries the baggage of punishment and pressures teachers to be technicians rather than professionals. Providers use guidance to prevent and resolve problems by building encouraging learning communities, and by using developmentally appropriate practice, positive communication skills and affirming relationships with children and families. EC professionals teach children to solve problems, rather than punish children for having problems they cannot solve, and guide toward skills that reduce and resolve classroom conflicts. The session includes the use of video clips, group discussions, handouts, and friendly humor–all designed to make the session accessible and engaging.
10:00am - 11:30am
Ballroom
Breakout Session Option 1
Dr. Calvin Moore, Jr.
Racial Equity in Early Childhood Education
Child care and early education policies are shaped by a history of systemic and structural racism. This has created major racial disparities in children’s access to quality child care that meets their cultural and linguistic needs and enables their parents to work. Early care and education workers are overwhelmingly in low-quality jobs with inadequate compensation. And workers of color are often relegated to the lowest-paid positions.
Racial Equity in Early Childhood Education will explore these critical racial equity issues in major early childhood programs, policies, and systems, including CCDBG, Head Start, and state pre-kindergarten programs. We will provide demographic and historical context for creating racially equitable early childhood policies and analyze policy issues related to access, quality, and the early childhood workforce.
